Tavern in the Square

OUR STORY
OUR PAST
In October of 2004 something amazing happened in Boston that would change our city forever. The Red Sox won the World Series. That same year, the first Tavern in the Square opened its doors.

Tavern in the Square began when a group of friends, with various back rounds in the restaurant industry came together and decided that Boston needed more than a “typical” sports bar. Joey Arcari, an Irish immigrant, came to Boston after gaining work experience in various bars throughout New York City. Renato Valentin began his restaurant work experience as a dishwasher and worked his way up to a chef, and then manager, before joining the partnership. Mark Morris began his restaurant career after many years of being the lead singer of the “Catunes”, one of New England’s most popular bands. Finally, Somerville native, Stephen DeSousa, who found his passion for the industry at age 18 and worked in various restaurants throughout Boston, rounded out the team that created Tavern in the Square.

We wanted to open a place that was not only a great spot to watch a game, but one that had a fun neighborhood vibe with friendly staff and high quality food and drinks. Therefore, when deciding on a name, we joined this concept with the location, Central Square in Cambridge, and Tavern in the Square was born. As the years have passed, Tavern in the Square has evolved from a sports bar into full-service restaurants which feature sizeable bars and patios. Each location continually adapts to fit the community in which it is located, creating a fun and casual atmosphere that is enjoyable for all ages.

OUR PRESENT
One of the biggest misconceptions about the Tavern in the Square is that our restaurants are a corporate chain. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Even with our fortunate expansion, we remain locally owned and operated, employing a hands-on approach in each location. We maintain a daily presence in our restaurants, continually evaluating the restaurants and consulting with staff and guests on how we can improve.

We are proud to be a scratch kitchen, making all of our offerings in-house daily. Our menu consists of inspired comfort food created by passionate chefs. Our chefs use seasonal, regional ingredients and strive to prepare the food in innovative, yet approachable ways. We feature an extensive selection of up to 50 seasonal draught beers from all over the world. We have also made supporting small local breweries a priority and therefore, feature a large selection from New England.

OUR FUTURE
As our restaurant group grows, we continue to focus on our guest’s satisfaction. We understand that our success lies in the meaningful connection we have established with our neighbors. We are appreciative and committed to supporting each of the communities who have welcomed us. We support dozens of charities annually through donations, sponsorships and fundraisers. We are especially proud of our annual Thanksgiving dinner, when we open our doors at three of our restaurant locations to help feed the less fortunate, and our annual “Toys for Tots” drive which has resulted in over 1000 toys being donated to local communities each holiday season.

We look forward to the future and are excited to grow and become part of many more communities in the years to come. Whether watching a game, having lunch with co-workers, or celebrating life events with family and/or friends, we aspire to be your local neighborhood tavern.
